Statement of Joe Rappaport, Executive Director, Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled, on Andy Byford’s resignation, January 23, 2020

I appreciated Andy Byford’s energy, his unprecedented inclusion of subway accessibility as a core principal at NYC Transit, and the access we’ve had to him and his staff.

But President Byford’s resignation makes it even clearer that we need  legally binding settlements in our subway accessibility lawsuits. The disability community can’t depend on the vagaries of transit or gubernatorial leadership.

Governor Cuomo and MTA Chair Pat Foye also must make sure that President Byford’s successor has a demonstrated knowledge of accessibility—and make it a basic criteria of their selection.
